The Channel District of Downtown Tampa continues its transformation from a warehouse and distribution center to a residential and arts & entertainment magnet. Recently a 356-unit Pierhouse Channelside apartment complex has been completed, and two other properties were entitled for hi-rise apartment towers. One of which, Skyhouse, should be complete mid 2015. Plans are in the works to construct a third public park in the neighborhood and significant infrastructure improvements continue to be made throughout the area. These amenities and improvements are certain to attract additional investment to this exciting and dynamic urban neighborhood. Many of these plans and improvement revolve around Tampa Bay Lightning owner, Jeff Vinik.
Vinik recently purchased Channelside Mall, and other parcels of land in the immediate vicinity. In 2015 he unveiled plans that included a USF Medical School, office and retail space, along with a hotel and a couple of parking garages. This billion dollar plus construction project is designed to bridge the gap between Channelside and Downtown Tampa and should bring another highly desirable urban location to live, work, and play close to Downtown Tampa.
