Inspired by a 16th Century walled city in Spain.
In 1970’s, Tampa resident, Robert (Bob) Sierra, began the development of an idea that he had for his native Hillsborough county. He merged 900 acres of beautiful land located 10 miles north of the city. The property had natural lakes, graced with stands of oak, pine and cypress trees, conservation areas midst Florida orange groves. Combining his love of golf course creation with his knowledge of country club community development, he and his three sons, John (Hi), Jr., Stuart and Michael, begun building his dream community.
All of the streets feature names of Spanish cities. The country club was designed with a clear nod to Spanish architecture and reinforced the private nature. A championship golf course was laid out and re-designed by Jack Nicklaus in 1988. (Avila Golf and Country Club Information)
